As a point of reference, the Epson Stylus NX400 took just 15:20. On our tests, it proved to be one of the slowest inkjets currently available, with a total time on our business applications suite of 32 minutes 20 seconds (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software, Not surprisingly, that's essentially a tie with the 31:56 time for its near-twin from Lexmark, the X4650. To say that speed is not one of the V305's strong points is an understatement. According to Dell, it also comes with drivers for Windows XP 圆4, Vista and Vista 圆4, and Windows 2000, as well as a full set of programs for each operating system. I installed the printer for Windows XP Professional on my tests. Simply set it in place, remove the packing materials, load the two ink cartridges and paper, run the automated installation program, and plug in the USB cable when the program tells you to. The V305 is easy to find space for, at just 7.0 by 17.7 by 12.3 inches (HWD). It's a vast improvement on hard-to-read, text-based LCDs. One other nice touch is the bright, highly readable OLED the V305 uses for its front-panel menu. You can then fill in circles on the sheet to give instructions, and let the printer scan the sheet and print the photos. It lacks an LCD for previewing photos, but it lets you print a proof sheet. The printer also offers photo-centric features, including the ability to print from PictBridge cameras, memory cards, and USB keys. The e-mail feature is a welcome touch for a home office, but the lack of an automatic document feeder (ADF) limits its usefulness for document scanning to light-duty needs. It can also scan to e-mail, by opening a new e-mail message on your PC and attaching the scanned document as a file. The V305 works as a printer, scanner, and standalone copier.
Note that except for Wi-Fi support, the V305 and V305W are identical, which means that all of my comments here apply to both Dell models. If prices on any of these models change, the relative values will change, too.
The point I'm making here is that price matters. On the other hand, its current direct price is just $99, making it a bargain compared with the X4650. You can get a Wi-Fi version of the V305-the V305W-but it costs $163 direct at its full price. The X4650 costs essentially the same as the full price of the V305 but adds Wi-Fi.
